Your Learning Team
To ensure your child’s success we believe there must be open, frequent, and reliable communication between parents, students, and teachers. This group working in collaboration with one another, make up your Learning Team.
In a distance learning environment, students work more independently than they would in a traditional classroom setting. Being academically successful requires a commitment to self-motivation and time management. While the flexibility Laurel Springs provides may be necessary for your child’s academic success, we believe there is a need to create and adhere to a working schedule.
Build an Effective Communication Strategy
Effective communication is the key to creating a learning team that will enable you to help your child achieve academic success.
The first step to building a strong learning team is to determine what method of communication works best for you. If having phone conversations are the best way for you to stay in touch, establish a schedule with your child’s teacher to speak on a routine basis to discuss your child’s progress. If you find email to be a better communication tool, exchange emails as often as necessary for you to feel informed regarding your child’s education.
Ask yourself the following questions, and then talk about them with your child and his or her teacher.
- What is your preferred mode of communication?
- What is your preferred time to communicate?
- How frequently do you think you will need to be in communication with your child’s teachers?
- How often do you need to check in with your child about his or her schoolwork?
Learning Management System Overview
When students in grades 5-12 who enroll in online classes at Laurel Springs, they take our online orientation course, which helps them to feel supported and informed about their academic responsibilities. Our online orientation course is designed to provide our families with the resources and information they need to ensure a positive experience at our school.
In our learning management system (LMS), parents use an observer account with special permissions that allows them to easily monitor their child’s academic progress. This observer account allows you to view course content, a detailed grade report for your child, notifications from your child’s teacher(s), as well as your child’s assignments that are due within the next week.
The observer home page displays your child’s enrollments, and it displays announcements applicable to you. Selecting a student’s name opens the student’s home page. On the student’s home page, the “Due Soon” section lists assignments and assessments that are due within the next week. The “My Courses” area lists the courses in which the student is enrolled. You can view course content, view a detailed grades report, see progress regarding mastery of course objectives, and view the history of your child’s course activity. Additionally, parents can click on “Announcements” to view their full text.
