Exam Proctoring

Proctoring Policy

Academic integrity is a cornerstone of the Laurel Springs philosophy.  Proctoring is the process of completing a test that is overseen by an authorized, neutral person who ensures the identity of the test taker and the testing environment.  The proctor acts as a proxy for the teacher.

In order to best understand which courses and students are impacted by this policy, and what the policy requires, please carefully review the following information.

Who does the policy apply to?

All high school core courses have a final exam that must be proctored. There is also a first semester exam for which proctoring is optional.

What does the policy require?

The policy requires that students find a test proctor for the final (second semester) exam.  Students have detailed instructions within their course materials that outline the process for obtaining a proctor and completing the final exam.  The proctor must fill out the Proctor Form.

Who is an appropriate proctor?

A qualified proctor is a professional or any adult who can fulfill the duties with integrity.  A proctor may be a certified teacher, counselor, librarian, school administrator, attorney, clergy person, military officer, or US Embassy official.  Most notaries will proctor a test (check in your local area).  The proctor cannot be a student’s family member.  Sometimes the proctor will charge a fee, which is the responsibility of the student.

What is an appropriate testing location for a proctored test?

A proctored test must be taken in a quiet space that is relatively free from distractions.  At the site, the student may not have access to printed or electronic testing aids.  The best sites include classrooms in K-12 schools, libraries, counseling centers, professional offices, US embassies, colleges, or universities.  Testing facilities are often available on military bases.  If there is any doubt about whether the testing site is appropriate, please contact student services.

Is the final exam required, and what is the passing grade?

The final exam is a mandatory part of the course.  Students who fail to take the exam will receive a grade of Incomplete in the course. Students must earn a minimum score of 70% in order to pass the exam.

Who can I contact if I have questions about the policy?
