NCAA

Laurel Springs has a long relationship with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and many of our courses are NCAA Division I and II approved.  Because our student population includes many athletes, our school counselors understand the importance of academic planning that includes NCAA courses.

Our NCAA approved courses meet certain requirements in rigor, content, and length; they also adhere to college preparatory standards.  Our teachers and students enjoy frequent interaction and evaluation (including phone conversations and email discussions) so that they are engaged on an individual level. Also, our NCAA approved courses have a clearly-defined time period in which each course must be completed.

Recently, NCAA legislators met to review their bylaws for nontraditional school programs; this category includes our school.  As a result, the NCAA passed the proposed legislation making major adjustments to their requirements for Division I courses effective August 1, 2010 and for Division II courses effective August 1, 2011. The purpose of the revised legislation is to promote academic consistency in NCAA-approved courses.  Our school’s NCAA approved courses have been fully sanctioned by the newly-revised bylaws for Division I and II.  Our school is proud of our commitment to academic excellence, as well as our dedication to providing full eligibility for our student athletes.

“Laurel Springs gave me the opportunity to continue pursuing rigorous advanced academic classes at a pace that worked well for me. This opportunity enabled me to learn many things beyond the standard high school courses, while maintaining a 4.24 GPA. I scored so well on my 10th grade SATs that I did not have to retake them in 11th grade. All this allowed me to gain acceptance into one of the top 20 universities in the world–one year early.” – Skylar Morton, Laurel Springs alumna

If you plan to enroll in college as a freshman and you wish to participate in Division I or Division II athletics, you should be taking NCAA approved courses throughout high school. There are a number of special procedures to follow to ensure you have the proper documentation and requirements for NCAA. Laurel Springs has a variety of resources to educate students about NCAA procedures. Please tell your school counselor if you need to be NCAA eligible.
