We recognize that middle school is a time for our students to learn the essential skills of organization, time management, and personal accountability. It is also a time for more challenging academic exploration and achievement, as well as increased opportunities for socialization within the supportive environment of our school community.
In order for our middle school students to have a successful educational experience at Laurel Springs, we have developed an online orientation program that is designed specifically for them. This course, which resides within our learning management system (LMS), gives students the information and tools that they need to feel comfortable within the Laurel Springs distance learning environment. Because we understand that the active involvement of parents (or other at-home support person) is critical to the academic success of our middle school students, the orientation includes some portions that require participation from parents. We encourage all parents to experience the orientation course so that you have a comprehensive understanding of how to help your children have the best possible experience at Laurel Springs. Students who are in 5th grade and are taking online courses should take the middle school online orientation course.
During orientation, families learn how students can be involved in collaborative learning opportunities such as student council (beginning in grade 7) and apply for admission to our chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. Beginning in grade 7, students have opportunities to benefit from clubs and dynamic educational and social experiences within our private online social network.
The middle school orientation teaches our students how to:
- Navigate through their courses and the gradebook
- Submit work to their teachers
- Communicate effectively with their teachers and other school staff
- Learn skills to manage their time and course schedules
- Meet the expectations set for Laurel Springs students
- Identify and advocate for their own expectations and needs
While the middle school orientation is not time-intensive for most students, it is an essential starting point that provides them with critical skills for academic success.
