Our online orientation provides the necessary information to ensure that each student has a rich and positive experience. Academy students are presented with information and activities during orientation that empower them with the necessary skills to be successful in the Laurel Springs environment, as well as their continued growth. The Laurel Springs orientation course helps each student create develop a personal schedule and time management plan based on individual needs, learning style, and extra-curricular commitments. Our students also learn how to navigate through courses and the grade book in order to maximize their learning experience. The orientation includes guidelines and expectations that help students understand how to achieve success within the flexible and supportive Laurel Springs learning environment.
Additionally, the orientation also explains our teacher services, including office hours that enable students to speak directly to their teachers. Ongoing communication and active participation are essential to building the relationship with your teacher that allows for a valuable learning experience. Outside of teacher services, our online orientation provides a directory of the support staff we have in place for our students, including school counselors, admissions coordinators, and our Student Support Services Department. Our Student Services Department uses a virtual classroom for daily office hours to help troubleshoot and answer questions.
During orientation, families learn how students can be involved in collaborative learning opportunities such as student council (grades 9-12) and apply for admission to our chapters of the National Junior Honor Society (grades 7-8) and National Honor Society (grades 9-12). Students in grades 7-12 have opportunities to benefit from clubs and find dynamic educational and social experiences within our private online social network as well as our series of symposia.
The online orientation course is comprised of five lessons, which help your child learn essential skills for success as a Laurel Springs student. Students who complete the orientation course will know how to:
- Navigate courses and gradebook
- Submit course work for review
- Communicate with the education team
- Effectively manage their time and course schedules
- Understand the expectations Laurel Springs students
- Identify and advocate for their own needs and expectations
While our orientation course does not require extensive time (10-30 minutes per lesson for most students), it does present vital information, and your child’s concentration is necessary to ensure success in his or her classes. The orientation will also allow you and your child to feel more comfortable at Laurel Springs, so that your family will have the best possible educational experience.
